Setting the play

17/11/2019

Building the play draws out more questions and more fun at every rehearsal!

This play has no scenes.

It is one long conversation between two people forced, through particularly difficult (but different) circumstances, to share the same space and time. It’s an exchange of thoughts, ideas, hopes and fears. It’s life in the capsule of an hour.

Kasia (Director), Harriet (‘Number Two’) and I (‘Number One’) found it very helpful to create back stories for both the characters. Who we are, what we do, where we come from, what brought us to the bench at the opening of the piece. We have discussed our characters’ paths through the whole play, identifying sections and giving them headings, helping to break down the information exchanged, the emotions unearthed, the needs of the two, both within themselves and from each other.

The lightness of the writing and humour often belies the depth of the characters’ pain, making the delivery of the lines, and the energy required, a unique responsibility and focus for the actors and director. To give sound to the words on the page, to make them live, is one of the greatest pleasures and obligations we have with A Bench at the Edge.
